The vacant lot at 297 Clinton Ave, Newark, NJ 07108, roughly occupies about one-quarter of a block, will be transformed into a temporary community activation site that fosters connection, safety, and collective care.

Through a series of interactive pillars featuring photos of local residents along with commuters, neighborhood spaces, and businesses that go with motivational poem verses, inviting reflection and dialogue. Along with statistics showing proof of community-building, such as talking with neighbors and participating in local events improve neighborhood comfort. Paired with questions that encourage residents imagine how they can shape their community through mapping and weaving local support systems.

This project is for long-term residents, new community members, commuters, and survivors of abuse connected to the Shani Baraka Women’s Resource Center. Conversations revealed a shared feeling of disconnection, influenced by ongoing redevelopment in the area. Many also shared that belonging starts with affordable housing and a supportive community. In response, the project encourages self-advocacy and invites neighbors to imagine what safety and belonging can look like on Clinton Avenue.

In addition to the installation, the project proposes the construction of a new sidewalk along the right side of the lot to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety. Mosaic elements will be integrated into the gutters of the surrounding fence, allowing the sidewalk to remain functional and accessible while still symbolizing care, repair, and attention to overlooked spaces. Together, these elements aim to spark conversation, encourage collaboration, and lay the groundwork for more inclusive and connected forms of togetherness.

The palette reflects themes shared by the community: pink for compassion, purple for domestic-violence awareness, yellow for hope, orange for strength, and blue for home. Together, these colors represent the neighborhood’s diversity and symbolize the unity and connection this project aims to inspire.
