Design By Race
Cirriculum
Design is often viewed as neutral, but in reality, it is shaped by cultural norms, societal power structures, and assumptions about the “ideal” user. Designed by Race challenges students to critically examine how race, particularly whiteness, has influenced everyday objects and systems. In the U.S., design has historically catered to a narrow, predominantly white standard, often overlooking the needs of others. This course encourages students to rethink how design decisions are made and to explore how products and systems can be created with a more inclusive perspective.
